CHEERS AND JEERS: Jeers to Ottawa for further delays to N.S.-P.E.I. ferry
Jeers to the federal government for further delaying a replacement ferry for the Holiday Island, which was scrapped after a fire in 2022. Transport Canada, which had previously stated a new ferry would be completed by 2028 to sail between Wood Islands, P.E.I., and Caribou, N.S., now has no timeline for the replacement vessel. The reasons given by Transport Canada to media amount to government gobbledygook: “In line with standard government contracting practices, the project is being managed on a gated basis, which means that new decisions are required before work can resume.” Luckily, Cardigan MP Kent MacDonald used clearer language, telling The Guardian the feds want to update the docking infrastructure and make it compatible with different vessels before continuing with the ferry build. Businesses and residents who rely on the service in eastern P.E.I., however, have waited long enough and deserve a clear delivery date.
