BOB WAKEHAM: What are the Toronto Blue Jays doing?
For a lifelong baseball fan who nearly got kicked out of college when the Mets won the World Series, watching the Blue Jays is frustrating right now
When my first baseball team of affinity, the New York Mets, won the World Series in 1969, my exuberant, over-the-top reaction — an extremist persona then in its embryonic stages — I came close to being ignominiously expelled from a junior college I was attending on the isolated plains of North Dakota.

Believe me, at the time, it took shocking behaviour or having the I.Q. of a mud trout to be hoved out of a two-year school desperate for enrollment and associated tuition, crucial factors in staying afloat in the competitive academic waters of two-year institutions of so-called higher learning.
But it was the former, the inappropriate actions of a member of the student body, that almost put me in the embarrassing position of having to phone my parents in New Jersey and inform them that their supposedly half-bright eldest child had been kicked out of a college. And a school that Mom, in particular, had located and covertly compiled and dispatched the necessary paperwork to its admission offices in order to provide me with a student deferment and avoid the rice paddies of Vietnam.
All of this background, as you might guess, is just more evidence of my near life-long addiction to baseball (among other professional sports), and a segue into the maddening frustration of watching my current baseball team of choice, the Toronto Blue Jays, just as they, and most of the other boys of summer, take a break from the long season for the All-Star Game.
