Despite the announcement of some new programs and capital spending, the latest budget by Finance and Affordability Minister Jill Burridge produced a record deficit and saw a number of government programs eliminated.

Premier Rob Lantz and his ministers had been telling Islanders for several weeks prior to the release of the document that cutbacks would be coming in the wake of the economic havoc caused largely by U.S. President Donald Trump. The current conflict with Iran has been steadily driving up prices and wreaking havoc with the financial plans of individuals, businesses and governments alike.

P.E.I. is hardly alone in facing the impact and the cost-cutting measures here are, on the whole, far less draconian than in Nova Scotia. That province implemented major cuts in such areas as education, health and the arts.
