In a decision that sets a concerning precedent for all Island municipalities, the Rob Lantz government has failed to back the Rural Municipality of Murray Harbour in its efforts to enforce a code of conduct bylaw infraction.

The incident relates to a sign Coun. John Robertson erected on his own property in September of 2023. The sign called the discovery of graves at several former residential schools across the country a “hoax” and called for the restoration of Sir John A. Macdonald’s integrity. In addition to being the country’s first prime minister, Macdonald was also the architect of the residential school system, which saw thousands of Indigenous children taken from their parents and placed in schools designed to assimilate them. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission determined the policy was part of a wider federal government policy of cultural genocide.
