To be fair, very few throne speeches (and I have heard a lot over 40 years as a reporter and columnist) fall into the category of being “game-changing.” They generally tend to be short on specifics and long on generalities.

Even considering that, Lantz has some unique challenges. It has only been a year since the last throne speech. While that was the norm when the legislature only held one session per year, the interval now tends to be two years and sometimes longer.

Back in March of 2025, Lantz was a caretaker premier following the surprise resignation of Dennis King. After teasing Islanders for the better part of a year over whether he would go after the Tory leadership on a permanent basis, he finally took the plunge and Justice Minister Bloyce Thompson........
