Peterborough editorial: Council willing to raise taxes to avoid service cuts

Setting an annual budget — and the property tax rates that go with it — is Job 1 for city council every year.

Barring some major shift over the next 10 days, that job is now done.

Following four nights of public presentations and debate, a $287-million budget has been approved and will go to a final vote Jan. 27.

While that budget plan covers the entire spectrum of city operations, it reflects council's thinking on two basic questions every municipality faces: How to deal with provincial funding cuts, and what level of tax increase is acceptable.

The budget Peterborough city council endorsed will increase homeowners' property taxes by 2.75 per cent. That works out to about $111 for the average home.
