Roads, services, and libraries: How Peterborough’s election impacts daily life
OK, summer is almost over. It’s time to put those lazy, hazy days behind you, perhaps pay one quick visit to Lake Ontario just to reassure yourself it’s still there, and start concentrating on the important business immediately at hand — the next municipal election.
It’s just weeks away, and much of what happens in your daily life, in and to your community, depends on its outcome.
Not that you would know that judging from the turnout four years ago when just 40.15 per cent of Peterborough’s eligible voters bothered to do so. Mind you, that was better than the provincial average of 32.9 per cent.
I can remember someone in Orillia complaining in the early ’60s that less than 75 per cent of Orillians voted in a recent town election. We’ve been on a downhill slide everywhere since then.
Why should you care........
