Farewell to New England

David and I were married on May 31, 1965. (David said that he agreed to May 31 because he thought May only had 30 days.)

I have been widowed now for 35 years, but still around this time each year my thoughts turn back to that May 61 years ago. 

The night following the wedding ceremony, we found ourselves in Montreal on our way to Rockport, Massachusetts and the start of a shared love affair with the coast of New England. With Cape Ann and Cape Cod. With Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. With the people, the small towns, the history and the landscape of America’s northeast coast. 

I would return later, on my own, to northern Maine. I know that I will not go back again.

For whatever reason, and I can’t remember exactly why, we decided to begin our honeymoon in a rented cottage near Rockport, on........
