The signs are already popping up. There is a knock on your door. You open it to be greeted by a candidate eagerly seeking your vote in October’s municipal election.

And there are a lot of candidates out there. Six running for mayor and a race in every ward.

This is a good thing. It shows that democracy is alive and well in this city even if it has taken a few hits recently at city hall. Even if the new procedural bylaw leaves a lot to be desired on this score. Even if strong-mayor powers, wherever they are used including here, are generally an affront to duly elected councillors and the public who elected them.

There are municipalities who are struggling to find candidates to fill council seats. And too many others where the seats are being filled by acclamation.

But not here. We should be grateful to all those........
