Religion in Canada today |
Like almost everybody in my culture, Canada, I care about the fate of the religions in the post-modern world.
Personally, the presence of progressive Christian people shaped my life, and contributed immensely to my happiness, my life choices, my consolation in tragedies, and the strengthening of my hope and resolve in this final phase of life. That’s just in one individual life.
Even more important is the positive influence of the progressive religions on the well-being of people. Our social solidarity and the many programs for people in health, education and welfare can be traced to the social gospel of the prairies in the ’30s, and particularly that of the United Church of Canada. It had been a merger of two mainline Protestant denominations, Methodists and Presbyterians, in 1926.
Jewish wisdom is world-known. I keep a copy of Rabbi Kushner’s book from years ago, “When Bad Things Happen to Good People.” I follow feminist theologian Susannah Heschel. There is the progressive Jewish magazine,........
