Uncomfortable with ‘menstruation?’ Here’s a list of confusing euphemisms

There was a time at this news outlet that the word "menstruation" or "tampon" would never have appeared.

Like Hamilton city council member Esther Pauls, who said this week she was "uncomfortable" talking about such matters, so once were we.

A century ago, when tampons were first invented, they came discreetly packaged in plain brown paper. We didn't even want to know about it back then, let alone talk about it.

And although advertising gurus have been pushing "feminine-hygiene" products for 100 years, they have mostly been talking around it, and twisting themselves in knots in the process.

That's why, even until recently, blue liquid rather than red appeared in television advertising, and phrases such as "that time of the month" meant menstruation.
