Paul Berton: Ugly Hamilton realities are now too obvious to ignore

1 0 0

I try to look for silver linings in dark clouds. It's the only way to get through some days.

And there have been a lot of dark days in Hamilton recently.

We have been reminded once again of an ugly reality too many of us are unwilling to confront: We're not the universally friendly, open city we like to brag about. Neither is this nation. There's a lot of intolerance out there. The recent violence at Hamilton's Pride celebrations in Gage Park is just another example.

The crisis has also highlighted the deep hurt many Hamiltonians experience. They feel unsafe in their city. And they feel little or no support — and even antagonism — from city hall and police, not to mention other institutions, including The Spectator.

Our failure as a community to understand the issues better or tackle them more comprehensively does not speak well........
