Margaret Shkimba: Menstrual Hygiene Day in Hamilton opens conversation about taboo topic

Tuesday is Menstrual Hygiene Day here in the city of Hamilton, the first ever. This morning there will be an address at City Hall by Coun. Maureen Wilson and in the late afternoon, a movie event downtown at Hamilton Artists Inc.

I'm done with all that. Have been for years. Decades, actually. I traded in my girlish figure for it and said goodbye to my waist, but I don't bleed anymore and thank the good goddess for that. Of course, I didn't have any say in it, but for me, it was the least favourite part of being a woman. It was something we all share, a commonality, a suffering in community. We share again in the trials of menopause and I guess I have the sharing of incontinence to look forward to as I get older. That'll be fun.

I never experienced any shame or stigma attached to menstruation, well, not from women. That came from the guys. The girls and women I know talk about it fairly openly and regularly. I'm of the generation that witnessed an intensified fight for women's health rights; we forced the conversation to break open the discussion.
