Mellor murder story inspires ‘Law & Order Toronto’ episode

Ever since “Law & Order” added Toronto to its family of shows, I have caught every episode. It’s fun to see Mayor Olivia Chow show up for a cameo and to note familiar landmarks and actors in its scenes.

However, last week’s episode hit even closer to home.

It opened with a grieving mother struggling to cope in jail after refusing to give in to the accusation she killed her infant daughter. As the story unfolded, it became clear a Peterborough case had inspired the script.

In case you don’t remember Jenna Mellor’s death, brace yourself for a horrifying story. In January 1997, Jenna died from a beating by a teenage boy assigned to babysit her. However, the police focused their investigation on her mother, Brenda Waudby.
