Discover Gerti’s: A hot spot for great food and good times in Peterborough

Located on Hunter Street West in the heart of downtown Peterborough’s Café District is a restaurant called Gerti’s, a well-established gastropub known for its warm and inviting atmosphere.

It is a place where you know there will be great food, good company and memorable moments. Gerti’s is a suitable restaurant choice for a relaxed evening out, a special dinner or a lively gathering with friends and family. The space offers something for every occasion. The high quality of food is consistent, and customers want to return time after time.

Over the years, this restaurant has been the setting for memorable experiences. From spending time with friends during my college years to celebrating special occasions, Gerti’s has remained a consistent favourite of mine.

Some of my favourite memories were sharing drinks on the back patio with friends during the summer evenings, as the patio space offers a peaceful oasis with exposed brick walls, a large green mural, black patio furniture, lush trees and vines and even little birds that sing their beautiful tunes.

If you drive on Hunter Street in the summer, you will notice the front sidewalk patio is packed with people enjoying their meals.

Gerti’s is located at 225 Hunter St. W. in downtown Peterborough.

The overall ambience is pleasant, offering warm lighting, tasteful decor, warm wooden accents and floor-to-ceiling windows. There is a prominent shiny wooden bar as you walk in the door with a stunning mirror wall with shelves of fancy liqueurs, bourbons, gins, vodkas and rums.

The comfortable booth seating and high-top tables make the space both inviting and versatile.

The menu is consistently impressive, from appetizers through dessert. The rotating specials add an element of excitement, offering something new with each visit.

On a recent visit, we ordered the blackened chicken Caesar wraps, which did not disappoint. The house salad remains a personal favourite, and the fries are equally satisfying. The “house specials” are an inviting opportunity to try something new created by their chefs in the kitchen.

Recently, I had the pleasure of enjoying a business lunch with a colleague at Gerti’s. I appreciated the relaxed yet professional setting while we had a productive discussion.

For this occasion, I had browsed through my 2026 Peterborough Musicfest Diner’s Book that I was gifted and flipped to Gerti’s. There was a “buy one entree, get one entree half off” coupon I was happy to use.

The portion sizes are filling; however, if you have the opportunity to order dessert, it is not to be missed (unless you are too full, which I understand). If the Gerti’s cheesecake is available, please order it, as it is exceptional, with a variety of flavours and seasonal themes available.

The Primal Cut burger further highlights the kitchen’s commitment to quality and flavour. It is one of the best burgers I have ordered in town. I noted how cool it was to find a “G” branded into the bun that was soft and fluffy. I chose to pair it with their sweet potato fries and dip. The restaurant also offers a kids’ menu, making it a welcoming choice for families too.

I have heard from many PTBO Eaters that the steak salad is unforgettable and have put it on my list to enjoy in the future. Gerti’s continues to be a standout destination in Peterborough’s dining scene, offering a balance of comfort, quality and memorable experiences.

Blackened chicken Caesar wrap — Grilled chicken breast, romaine, Caesar dressing, bacon, three-cheese blend, chipotle aioli and Parmesan in a sun-dried tomato wrap. Served with your choice of side.

Gerti’s bruschetta — Grilled baguette toasted with goat cheese, tomato, onion and drizzled in balsamic glaze. A perfect appetizer to share.

The house salad — Mesclun greens, mandarin oranges, almond slices, cucumber, peppers, shredded carrots and a house-made basil vinaigrette.
