Some books to cosy up with this winter  

I’d like to share some books to enjoy over these cold, snowy winter months. As part of the Peterborough Public Library’s book club, I have taken part in discussions facilitated by librarian Karen Bisschop. Many of the titles are available at the Peterborough Public Library, Take Cover Books, Happenstance, Chapters or online.

In her first novel, “The Winter Witch,” set for release on Jan. 27, Jennifer Chevalier writes about the travails of the daughters of the king, the “filles du roy,” who braved stormy seas with meagre rations to travel from France in the late 17th century to become brides of the bachelor habitants and regiment members in New France. It’s told from the perspectives of two orphaned sisters, Elisabeth and Marthe, who have limited options in their tiny village.

After being cursed by a “winter witch” in a tavern, Elisabeth is convinced that a demon lives inside her. The Catholic........
