Curl up with these five books this fall
I’d like to share some books to enjoy this fall. Many of the titles are available at the Peterborough Public Library, Happenstance, Chapters, online or at Take Cover Books, whose new address is 391 Water St.
An important book to read ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation or Orange Shirt Day on Sept. 30, “Eliza Sunshine” by Michelle Good is a multi-generational family saga centring on the changes, hardships and prejudice First Nations women have experienced from the 1800s to the 1960s, loosely based on the author’s heritage. Great-grandmother Swan witnesses the slaughter of the buffalo at the hands of the white settlers, resulting in the loss of her peoples’ livelihoods. Her granddaughter Eliza Sunshine is sent to residential school, and when she returns battered and malnourished, Swan tries to restore her by teaching her Cree ways and medicines. Eliza’s daughter Ella carries on the fight against the brutality and racism still prevalent........
