Three tiny, fuzzy killdeers and a very clever mom

We had stopped at a little alcove by the edge of the water to see if there were any green herons or other waterfowl there and almost immediately noticed some small blurry things zipping back and forth under the tree canopy.

It wasn’t until I put the binoculars on it that we realized it was a baby killdeer. That surprised us because it was so very tiny and it seemed to be all by itself. We knew that could not be, so we got out to investigate. We soon discovered that there were three little blurry things running all over the rocky shelf that protruded out into the water.

The three young killdeer chicks raced all about the rock shelf.

They were just the cutest little fuzz balls you ever saw …. with long, long legs like stilts. They didn’t stay still for a second and it was very hard to get the........
