I was out delivering our 2026 wildlife calendars recently when one of my customers mentioned he had seen a deer carcass by the side of the road with a very large bird feeding on it — and a bald eagle sitting nearby in a tree.
He said the bird on the carcass didn’t have a white head and it was even bigger than the bald eagle. He wondered what it could be.
I said, “Wow … Cool! That would have to be either a golden eagle, or a juvenile bald eagle.”

I explained it was possibly a golden eagle passing through our area. They don’t normally live here, so it was more likely a young bald eagle. When a bald eagle is in its first year, it does not have a white head yet, and also, it is the biggest it will ever be. Nature has a wonderful way of taking care of its own.
