Carp carcass mystery solved, perhaps

Ever since I started photographing bald eagles, a mystery has plagued me.

During the winter, one of the food sources for bald eagles is carp carcasses that wind up out on the ice. I have seen these carp carcasses on many of the waterways here in the Kawartha Lakes.

The mystery is, how did they get there? The eagles feed on them but they did not catch them, or bring them up on the ice. They are much too large for an eagle to catch or lift. The eagles are merely scavenging the dead carcasses.

I have asked many people about this and have often been told that the carp jump too close to the edge of the ice and wind up stranded on the ice. This seemed odd to me because carp are bottom feeding fish that feed on plant matter, seeds and a wide........
