Peterborough walk raises funds to help Afghan women and girls learn
Let Afghan women and girls learn!
This is the rallying call of this year’s Red Pashmina Walk that takes place May 30 at Emmanuel United Church. This 16th annual event is hosted by the Peterborough chapter of Right to Learn Afghanistan and the Red Pashmina Campaign to raise funds for the education of women and girls in Afghanistan.
What began in 2011 as a small walk and grassroots event in Peterborough has now grown into a national movement where participants are encouraged to wear red or purchase a Red Pashmina scarf to wear. This year, five additional cities — Toronto, Ottawa, Victoria, Vancouver and Saskatoon — will hold their own walk on the same weekend.
“Millions of Afghan girls are banned from attending school under Taliban rule. Proceeds from the walk will provide laptops, internet and scholarships for Afghan women to restore their access to education,” states a news release for the event.
Check-in on the day of the walk begins at 1:45 p.m. at Emmanuel United Church, located at the corner of George and McDonnel........
