Trump’s diplomatic urge to untangle Kashmir knot

RECENTLY, Pakistan has once again nominated US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. This decision is based on Pakistan’s belief that the US President has been playing a significant role in brokering peace in regional conflicts. Moving forward, envisaging a peace plan for Gaza in the Middle East and reimagining a peace plan for Ukraine in Europe, alongside, resolving the simmering nuclear Kashmir issue in South Asia, should be the primary focus of Trump’s peace-driven agenda. Against this backdrop, the people and government of Pakistan expect President Trump to play a pivotal role in South Asia’s peace crisis sustainably. And of course, Trump’s mediatory efforts can help facilitate a comprehensive India-Pakistan peace dialogue.

As the world watches President Trump’s peace endeavors in resolving the conflicts in the Middle East and Europe, in terms of the Gaza and the Ukraine crises, the pressing issue of Kashmir in South Asia, beckons for resolution. The simmering Kashmir issue is widely perceived as the bedrock of the South Asian peace crisis primarily because it is the central source of persistent hostility between two nuclear-armed rivals, India and Pakistan. The dispute fuels militarization, regional instability and a constant risk of catastrophic conflict, which in turn stifles economic development and regional cooperation.

The decades-long conflict between India and Pakistan does remain as a persistent thorn in the way of regional stability. Kashmir is recognized internationally as a long-standing, heavily militarized conflict zone and a potential nuclear flashpoint between India and Pakistan. US President........
