Pakistan’s peace diplomacy: Mediating Iran-US ceasefire

PAKISTAN has emerged as an important diplomatic actor after successfully facilitating a temporary ceasefire between Iran and the United States during the recent escalation of hostilities in the Middle East.

At a time when tensions threatened to spiral into a wider regional conflict, Pakistan stepped forward with a proactive diplomatic initiative that helped create space for dialogue and de-escalation. The development has not only prevented a potentially catastrophic expansion of the war but has also highlighted Pakistan’s growing role as a responsible stakeholder in regional and global peace. The conflict began when the United States, along with Israel, launched large-scale military strikes on Iranian targets on February 28, 2026. The attacks reportedly caused extensive damage to Iran’s military installations, infrastructure and strategic facilities. The strikes also resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian officials and military commanders, including prominent religious and political figures. The scale of destruction and loss of life intensified tensions across the region and triggered fears of a prolonged and devastating war.

Iran responded forcefully to the attacks. In retaliatory operations, Iranian forces targeted several United States military installations located in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Iraq. The exchanges significantly heightened regional instability and brought the Middle East dangerously close to a broader military confrontation.
