JD Vance’s message to India |
US Vice President JD Vance recently made an intriguing remark. He said that two people occupy a special place in his life: one is Indian and the other Pakistani. The Indian, of course, is his wife, Usha Vance, whose importance in his personal life needs no explanation. The Pakistani, however, is Pakistan’s Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. Why did JD Vance make such a statement? At first glance, it appears to have been nothing more than a pleasant exchange during a high-level meeting. Such informal conversations are common in diplomacy. Before formal discussions begin, leaders often engage in light-hearted conversation to establish a cordial atmosphere and similar remarks are frequently exchanged at the conclusion of meetings.
Yet diplomacy is rarely accidental. While such comments may sound spontaneous, they are often carefully chosen. Statesmen frequently decide in advance which messages they wish to convey directly and which they prefer to communicate indirectly. It is therefore reasonable to ask whether JD Vance intended to send a broader diplomatic signal through these remarks. Diplomatic communication often operates on two levels. The formal record consists of official statements, joint declarations and policy documents. Equally important, however, are the informal remarks made before cameras or during private conversations.
