Pope Leo and Trump: A clash of visions

THE recent Islamabad talks between the United States and Iran, which reportedly continued for nearly 21 exhausting hours, have ended without any tangible breakthrough, leaving the world deeply disappointed.

The global community had pinned high hopes on these negotiations, expecting a possible off-ramp from a war that has already inflicted grave human and economic costs upon the region. Yet, despite the long and difficult dialogue, no cogent result emerged.

This failure has further intensified the debate surrounding the legitimacy and conduct of the war itself. Many critics argue that the conflict was initiated without explicit authorization from the United Nations or the US Congress, raising serious questions about legality and international norms. The tragedy, according to this view, is that while Iran was reportedly engaged in peace dialogue, the United States and Israel launched military action, targeting key political and military figures. Reports of civilian casualties, including children, have further deepened global concern. Pope Leo, too, has repeatedly drawn attention to the suffering of innocent civilians and described threats against the Iranian people and their civilization as “truly unacceptable.” Initially, Washington reportedly denied certain aspects of the operation, but later acknowledged civilian deaths as a mistake. This sequence has undeniably weakened America’s credibility at the negotiation table. Entering the Islamabad talks with a trust deficit and subsequently projecting triumphalist rhetoric has only reinforced perceptions that diplomacy was not approached with the seriousness required by the moment.
