Denley: Changes under COVID-19 are only temporary – and should be

One of the many annoying aspects of this challenging time is the sudden explosion of the term “the new normal.” What’s surprising is not that the popular descriptor is so trite, but that so many of the people using it seem to think they have come up with something clever, perhaps even profound.

Actually, it’s both witless and inaccurate. While this lean and frightening time is new, it’s definitely not normal and it’s not going to become normal. There are simply too many powerful forces aligned against that outcome.

Numbers alone would tell us that this so-called normality is not sustainable. More than one million Ontarians have been laid off and are uncertain when, or if, they will go back to work. The federal government can’t cover the costs of a dramatically reduced economy indefinitely, not when that means a deficit of more than $200 billion. Keeping two million Ontario children out of school limits parents’ ability to work.
