The city of Ottawa has a new policy for naming and renaming municipal streets, parks and other facilities, and it may help us celebrate local heroes, and redress some of the wrongs of the past.
The new commemorative naming policy will focus more on local people, their histories, stories, and legacies “with equitable representation of communities and cultures,” including “under-represented equity-denied” individuals and groups.

Let’s hope this policy is not about particular groups, or an attempt to fill quotas to balance some perceived wrongs, but a genuine effort to recognize local people who have done great things for the city.
