Forgive the flashbacks as Ottawa OKs Phase 2 of LRT

Am I the only one looking at Phase 2 of LRT and having Olympic flashbacks?

Possibly I’m too nervous for my own good. Maybe it’s this “spring” weather messing with my system. But the speed with which Ottawa Council approved the $4.6-billion expenditure recently has me quaking in my stubbornly still snowy boots.

For readers too young to remember, Montreal was awarded the 1976 Olympic Games in 1970 and, as is customary in such circumstances, looked at finding ways to make gobs of money disappear so fast nobody could follow it. True, the stadium was already a dream for then-mayor Jean Drapeau, who wanted the brand-new Major League Baseball team to move there from Jarry Park. And yes, we mourn the loss of the Expos to this day. I have fond memories of cheering, along with Youppi!, for my heroes Tim Raines, Andre Dawson and Gary Carter. Those aren’t the flashbacks I’m worried about.

It’s the delays and cost overruns. The original budget, just for the stadium, was $134 million – in dollars of that era, which no doubt makes Eugene Melnyk........
