Readers sound off on transgender women, the debt ceiling and Chuck Schumer

Woodside: Thank you for allowing Cathy Young to publish her op-ed in the Daily News (”Transgender rights & women’s rights,” Sept. 22).

In an effort to create a dramatic false equivalency of trans women being a danger to non-trans women, she finds one possible instance of one person possibly threatening women in a locker room.

If there are 20 million people in New York State, then there could be as many as 150,000 trans people in the state, using the Williams Institute’s .75% as an estimate. The story of trans people in New York is inadequate healthcare, low wages, a struggle to find safe housing and to find love and support within the family. You could find these stories every day. Whether we are talking about Layleen Polanco dying in solitary on Rikers Island in 2020 or Ellie Williams being found in the sand at Orchard Beach, violence against trans people in New York can be the real story.

I started advocating for trans rights in New York in 1997 and have continued to do so at the state level with the Gender Recognition Act in the last year.

If you examine the stories in the Daily News, you will see the danger to women in New York is not trans women, but men. That is where there is real violence. This month, New Yorker were horrified by the arrest of Justin Soriano [photo] for shooting his pregnant ex in the head, killing her and the fetus (“Bust in killing,” Sept. 17). Please ask Cathy Young to review those relationships if she is worried about the quality of life for women in New York. Melissa Sklarz

East Orange, N.J.: All individuals who have a penis and identify as male should use the men’s facilities. All individuals who do not have a penis and identify as female should use the women’s facilities. All individuals who do not fall into category 1 or 2 should use the transgender facilities, where they can be whoever they feel like on any given day. Ellen Moxley
