Fishkill, N.Y.: Voicer Daniel Dolgicer was correct about President Trump’s delusional and dangerous threats to Greenland and to its protector, fellow NATO member Denmark. Trump is ignorant about, among other things, U.S. history. During his first administration, some tried to teach him. His most senior military and foreign policy advisors attempted to give him necessary tutorials about the basic facts of NATO’s founding and its vital importance to our own national security and economic prosperity. They failed. His “instincts” and willful ignorance prevailed over facts and history.
Denmark was one of the first European nations to join the alliance and one of the first NATO members to rush to assist the U.S. after the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Only the U.S. and England lost more men and women per capita killed in action than Denmark. Does Trump even know the U.S. asked for NATO’s help under Article 5 of the treaty, and that Denmark and the alliance rushed to help us in Afghanistan and Iraq? Does Trump know or care that it was the Danish resistance during World War II that at extremely great risk ferried their Jewish fellow citizens and refugees to neutral Sweden? The Danish fight for freedom and human rights is long and storied. We should honor it, not reject it in a bid to follow one of Trump’s craziest delusions.
Why is it that every day, as Dolgicer points out, Trump takes the side of our enemies, even emulating their aggression, while betraying our friends? Trump’s ultimate betrayal of Ukraine is staring us in the face. Vladimir Putin is loving every minute of this standoff with a fellow NATO member. Gerald Browne
Davidson, N.C.: We are facing a serious situation. Trump’s proposals are dangerous. We need to do something to stop him. It’s obvious that his mental capability has declined. When you watch him speak, he mumbles and seems not to know what he’s saying. His Greenland proposal could put us in a war with Denmark and other NATO members.........
