The trouble with ‘Less is More’: The parole reform bill falls prey to progressive criminal justice reform myths

The “Less is More” parole reform bill, signed into law by Gov. Hochul on Friday, is the latest installment in a series of progressive legislation meant to prematurely empty our prisons of dangerous offenders and descend us further into lawlessness. With the governor’s signature, came the immediate release of an additional 191 inmates from Rikers Island. More inmates from throughout the state are expected to be released in the coming days. This occurs at a time when the Rikers population, having dropped to historic lows during last year’s pandemic and, remains well below anything we have seen in recent decades despite a modest increase since then. As parole exists in New York only for felony convictions, many of the soon-to-be-released parole violators have prolific criminal histories, potentially presenting dangers to themselves and the communities they return to.

Less is More was sponsored by recently appointed Lt. Gov Brian Benjamin. As state senator, Benjamin also sponsored the disastrous bail reform legislation, along with the separate “Fair and Timely Parole” bill, which, if enacted, will drastically limit the state parole board’s........
