Parents, ask: Are you vaccinated?

“Are you vaccinated?”

It’s a question that many are uncomfortable asking, but if you’re a parent, it’s one you have to ask — of teachers, babysitters, camp counselors, and, yes, other parents.

We have three children, the oldest of whom is turning 5 this summer. And while the risks posed to them by COVID-19 are small, they’re not nonexistent. There’s also the danger, of course, of our children contracting the virus and passing it on to their grandparents or other vulnerable relatives.

Some claim that getting vaccinated is a “personal choice” and that they should not be asked to reveal their “decision.” Yet this ignores the fact that vaccination rates affect society as a whole, and that each individual’s refusal to get vaccinated puts the rest of us in greater danger. We don’t extend this libertarian-like construct to other areas — we don’t say, for instance, that having brake lights on your car or using turn signals is a “personal decision” or that factory safety conditions are........
