After Cuomo’s resignation: What accountability looks like

Last week was eventful for survivors of sexual violence. While New York welcomed its first woman governor, Kathy Hochul, following the resignation of Andrew Cuomo, the survivor justice movement was forced to reckon with how best to serve and represent ourselves in the public eye.

As a survivor and survivor advocate, I strongly caution against conflating Cuomo’s resignation with true accountability. Instead, I hope that we use this time to transform our institutions and systems to center survivors and lay the foundation for workplaces free of sexual violence and misconduct.

First: New York Attorney General Letitia James’ investigation should serve as a blueprint for how political workspaces address sexual harassment in their ranks. James’ investigation was grounded in the belief that every woman who came forward deserved to be heard.
