Another reason to oust Dr. Zucker

The state of New York is physically ill at a crisis level which seems to have little public understanding, and I’m not referring to COVID. To name just one among many conditions, 11% of adults in New York — 16% in New York City — have diagnosed diabetes.

Key indicators flashed warning after warning. The state’s diabetes-related lower-limb amputations soared by 48% from 2009 to 2016 without the Health Department meaningfully responding. What the state calls “potentially preventable” hospitalizations for diabetes complications jumped by 56% between 2016 and 2018 — the last year for which we have data. These hospitalizations largely occur when chronic disease is out of control, and can often be prevented through appropriate patient self-care education that the state refuses to provide.

Gov. Hochul has the opportunity to save thousands of lives and billions of dollars. The state will cover the $70,000 to $250,000 cost of those amputations but will not cover the $900 per-patient cost of the peer education programs that have helped residents of vulnerable communities drive down their blood sugar levels and avoid complications.
