Something is very wrong with this picture. Climate Week kicked off in New York City on Monday with a keynote panel featuring the president of National Grid — the same National Grid that’s trying to jam a new fracked gas pipeline through Brooklyn. Meanwhile in Washington, Senate Democrats tapped Joe Manchin, a man who made half a million dollars last year from coal investments, to craft their climate plan, not long after the Biden administration claimed that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s alarming new report on climate change does not ”provide sufficient cause” to end offshore drilling.

New York State’s hypocrisy is also on full display. Gov. Hochul this week announced two new major transmission lines and expansion of distributed solar energy to 10 gigawatts by 2030. The larger of these transmission lines involves a $20 bllion, 25-year contract with Hydro Quebec, locking New York into building a new transmission cable along the Hudson River and importing hydroelectric energy from Canada for decades. This construction risks contaminating local drinking water through much of the Hudson Valley, including in the Town of Esopus, where one of us lives. The project also tramples on indigenous........
