Norfolk and Suffolk mayoral elections to be delayed for TWO YEARS

The elections were due to be next May and ministers are likely to cite the need for more time to finish reorganising local authorities.

It would be the second time elections have been delayed, as the local May elections this year were postponed until 2026 amid the reorganisation of local government in England.

The new mayor will oversee major projects across Norfolk and Suffolk.

The main parties have already announced their mayoral candidates.

They are: Norwich city councillor Carli Harper (Labour), Suffolk police and crime commissioner Tim Passmore (Conservative), Norfolk county councillor David Bick (Reform UK), chairman of the East of England Energy Group Kevin Keable (Liberal Democrats) and East Suffolk Council leader Caroline Topping (Greens).

Zia Yusuf, Reform’s head of policy, said: “This is a blatant attempt to stop big Reform wins next May. It’s an act of a desperate government who are clinging on to power by any means necessary.

“Labour has proven time and time again that they’re not beyond denying democracy to millions of people in order to maintain their cosy status quo.”
