Bookshop owner nominated for national award

The Book Hive, on Norwich's London Street, is up for the overall Independent Bookshop of the Year at the British Book Awards.

This is after it won for the East of England in March, which it was also awarded in 2018 and then again in 2020, alongside several nominations for the category over the years.

Henry Layte opened the store in 2009, which is also where two publishing companies - Galley Beggar Press and Propolis - were founded.

"We have won quite a lot of awards over the years, which I am so grateful for but this one feels particularly special," said Mr Layte.

"It feels more valuable because it is an industry award, so we are being recognised by our peers."

He added: "I have no idea if we will win, but I am hopeful.

"We have had a really positive response from customers since we won the regional award.

"Everyone lives half their lives online, so this recognition gives people a reminder of what we do."

For the last three years, Mr Layte has curated the Mannington Hall Book Bash, which he believes is one of the reasons behind the shop's regional win.

The festival works to bring internationally renowned writers, poets, sports stars, performers, comedians and foodies to a rural Norfolk community.

The 2025 bill was topped by best-selling authors, including Sarah Perry, Natalie Haynes, Adam Buxton, Esther Freud and Mónica Feria Tinta.

"I would not have been able to get this far without my dedicated customers and hard-working staff," said Mr Layte.

All bookshops which won in the regional categories are up for the overall award at the ceremony on May 11 at Grosvenor House.
