Christmas poultry auctions are going ahead despite the 'shadow' of bird flu

The devastating avian influenza virus has taken a "heartbreaking" toll on the region's poultry farms in recent weeks, with thousands of turkeys culled in the run-up to the busy festive season.

Although national retailers are not expecting any overall shortages of turkeys or other seasonal poultry, Norfolk's annual poultry auctions are expected to be smaller this year.

But organisers said they remain a great opportunity for people to bid for a quality farm-fresh bird for their festive........
