Tributes pour in for 'dedicated' firefighter who lost own son in pub fire

William Betts started working at Wroxham Fire Station in 1942 during the Second World War.

His son Christopher followed in his footsteps and was also based at Wroxham, but lost his life in the fire at The Chequers Pub in Hainford, near Norwich, in 1987.

Paying tribute, deputy chief fire officer, Scott Norman, said: "We thank William for his dedicated service and the commitment he and his family have shown to Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service ever since.

"We know what a heartbreaking tragedy it was to lose Christopher and we have worked closely with both William and his grandson Marek, along with Colin at Norfolk Fire Museum, over the last year to pay tribute to this ultimate sacrifice.

"We are very sad to hear of William's passing but hope they are reunited now."
