Number of asylum seekers housed in hotels in Norwich drops

Official Home Office figures have shown a decrease of 45 asylum seekers being put up in hotels in the city.

The number has fallen from 207 to 162 between September and the end of December last year.

A spokesman for the Home Office said: "The home secretary has set out the most sweeping changes to our asylum system in a generation to restore order and control to our borders.

"The government is removing the incentives drawing illegal migrants to Britain.

"That is why we will close every single asylum hotel, moving illegal migrants into basic accommodation like military barracks.”

One hotel that houses migrants in the Norwich area is the Brook Hotel in Bowthorpe.

Data, retrieved by a Freedom of Information request by this newspaper, recently highlighted a large increase in Section 34 orders in the area after continuous protests outside the hotel.

The orders require people to disperse from a location for up to 48 hours.

In 2025, there were 37 orders issued in Norwich West, which includes Bowthorpe.

Prior to last year, there had only been one other Section 34 notice issued there, in 2020.
