US build-up in West Asia tops 57,000 troops: Is a ground war in Iran imminent?
Amid the escalating conflict with Iran, US military build-up in West Asia has taken an unprecedented shape. The US troop presence in the region is poised to exceed 57,000. Recent deployments, including around 3,500 Marines aboard the USS Tripoli and additional paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne, have given rise to the speculation about US ground invasion on Kharg Island and the Strait of Hormuz, even as diplomacy continues.
New Delhi: In the biggest military build-up since 2003, the US troops’ presence in West Asia is set to surpass 57,000 amid the war with Iran. Fresh deployments are being stepped up amid the ongoing conflict.
On Saturday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that about 3,500 military personnel had arrived in the Middle East on board the USS Tripoli. Thousands of soldiers from the army’s 82nd Airborne to the region are also being sent as Washington is mulling to launch an attack on Kharg Island.
