India's obesity crisis to pose severe economic, health crisis later: Report
New Delhi: A new health report has raised an urgent alarm on India’s growing struggle with obesity, warning that the country could face severe economic and health consequences if preventive action is not prioritised. Published by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) on the eve of Anti-Obesity Day, Building on Success to Secure India’s Future Health argues that India must lead the world in preventive healthcare to avoid a future surge in costly, chronic diseases.
The report was released during a closed-door discussion in the capital attended by policymakers, global health experts, and public-health organisations. As part of the roundtable, participants debated how India can move beyond a treatment-centric system and build a national strategy that reduces chronic illness before it requires expensive medical intervention.
