The United States has launched a major military operation in Syria targeting the Islamic State group following a deadly attack that killed three Americans near the historic city of Palmyra, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced.

In a post on X, Hegseth said US forces had begun Operation Hawkeye Strike to dismantle ISIS fighters, weapons sites and infrastructure. The operation was launched in direct response to the December 13 attack on a convoy involving US and Syrian forces in central Syria.

“If you target Americans — anywhere in the world — you will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you,” Hegseth warned, calling the assault a “savage attack”.
