Why is the politics around the slum-dwellers and JJ-clusters heating up in Delhi?

AAP Convener Arvind Kejriwal knows how to win a war of words. He proved it once again. Fighting to avoid any dent in his key support base of slum dwellers and people of unauthorised colonies, Kejriwal on Sunday threw a challenge at Union Home Minister Amit Shah that he would not contest Delhi elections if BJP gives undertaking in the court that all displaced occupants from these colonies will be rehabilitated on the evicted land itself within the 24 hours.

Kejriwal’s challenge to Shah comes a day after the BJP’s launch of “Jaha jhuggi wahan makan” campaign and called upon the slum dwellers to liberate Delhi of AAP to ensure their welfare. Alleging that BJP remembers them (slum dwellers) only during the Delhi elections, Kejriwal also asked Shah to first withdraw all the police cases filed against the people of JJ-clusters in relation with illegal constructions and demolitions.

“Withdraw all the cases you filed against the people of Jhuggis and submit an affidavit in court that you (BJP) will give houses to all the people on the same land that they have been living in earlier. If you do so, I will not contest the elections. I give you this challenge, accept it,” said Kejriwal at the Railway Jhuggi Basti of Shakur Basti assembly constituency.

He further said that the saffron party will prioritise the land over slum-dwellers if elected to power and cited the example of Shakur Basti........
