The IITian Who Turned Self-Knowledge into a Mass Movement

An IIT and IIM graduate walked away from a career those degrees all but guaranteed, and built one of India's largest not-for-profit knowledge institutions around an unfashionable idea: that a person can be taught to see themselves clearly.

There is a version of Prashant Tripathi’s life that follows the standard success template of urban India. A B.Tech from IIT Delhi, an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad, and a Civil Services rank good enough to secure a government posting. In most families, that resume ends the conversation about whether a child has done well.

But he left all of that. He resigned from the service he had trained for, moved away from the corporate track his degrees pointed to, and gave the years that followed to imparting wisdom through talks and to a body of existential writing that ran alongside them.

Two decades later, the man now known to millions as Acharya Prashant runs the PrashantAdvait Foundation, a not-for-profit whose stated mission is deceptively plain: the ‘mass-based education of the self’. Its output is large. Almost daily sessions on wisdom literature, more than 160 books, a mobile app, community study groups working through scripture line by line, and a digital presence the Foundation reports as reaching more than 115 million people across platforms. Featured in 2026 on the Watkins list of the world’s most spiritually influential people, he is, for a philosopher whose material runs from the Gita to Western existential writers, working at a scale unusual enough to be its own story.
