'Sovereignty loss claims absolute nonsense': Goyal as India–US interim trade deal likely by mid-March
New Delhi: Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said the United States is expected to issue an executive order reducing tariffs on Indian products to 18 per cent from 50 per cent, with India and the US likely to sign their interim trade agreement by mid-March.
Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Goyal said Indian exporters would be able to avail the reduced 18 per cent tariff from the date the executive order is issued by the Trump administration. He said both sides are finalising the legal text of the interim trade deal and that US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has been invited to New Delhi next month for the signing.
An interim India–US trade deal framework was announced last week after months of negotiations amid tariff tensions, including additional US duties linked to India’s purchases of Russian oil. The agreement provides for reciprocal US tariffs on Indian goods to be brought down to 18 per cent.
