Explained: Canada denies India’s link to Nijjar killing; ‘isolated’ Trudeau fears Trump & Modi bonding

In what can be termed as Canada’s huge embarrassment and faux pas moment Justin Trudeau-led government has denied reports linking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to criminal activities in Canada.

Justin Trudeau’s National Security and Intelligence Advisor Nathalie G Drouin said in a statement that the Canadian government is unaware of any evidence of the claims made by the Canadian media house citing unnamed officials. Additionally, a report in Canada’s Globe and Mail newspaper quoted Canadian officials as saying that India was already aware of the plot to assassinate Hardeep Singh Nijjar and the Indian National Security Advisor and Foreign Minister were aware of this conspiracy.

The Indian government had called this report wrong and absurd on Thursday and now the Canadian government has also distanced itself from this report.

After these allegations by the Canadian media, the Ministry of External Affairs of India has issued a statement denying them. MEA said that such “smear campaigns” only “further damage our already strained relations.” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a recent statement, “We generally do not comment on media reports. However, such ridiculous statements allegedly made by a Canadian government source to a newspaper should be dismissed with the same contempt they deserve. Such smear campaigns only further damage our already strained relations.”
