Constitution Day: Why we need to draw a line between pluralism and appeasement

We celebrate Constitution Day on Tuesday, November 26, to mark the occasion when 75 years ago on this day the Indian Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly. Marking the historic moment in Indian democracy when our country accepted a written Constitution which became the basis of our governance. Today a lot is being said by the Opposition about the Constitution which has started the narrative that the Constitution is in danger.

Amid this debate, Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor while quoting BR Ambedkar said, “However good a Constitution may be, if those implementing it are not good, it will prove bad. However bad a Constitution may be, if those implementing it are good, it will prove good. Tharoor was speaking at the inaugural session of the ‘National Convention on the Constitution of India’ at OP Jindal Global University to commemorate the 75th year of the adoption of the Constitution.

In his address, Tharoor said, “You can only speak of India in the plural. The Latin maxim, ‘e pluribus unum’, means ‘out of many, one’ and is the United States’ motto. But for India, it should say ‘out of many, many’, given the plurality of ideologies, groups and ways of doing things in our country.”
