New Delhi: The United States on Friday rolled out fresh sanctions targeting Iran’s oil trade, moving swiftly just hours after indirect talks in Oman. The timing underlined Washington’s continued use of economic pressure even as diplomatic channels remain open.
The new measures are aimed at curbing Iran’s oil exports which US officials say help fund activities that destabilise the region and fuel repression at home. The sanctions were announced shortly after Iranian and American representatives wrapped up a day of discussions in Muscat, which Iran described as taking place in a “positive atmosphere”.
