Restrictions announced on silver imports to curb demand of dollars: DGFT to approve

The Centre has put restrictions omn the import of silver which was galloping creating a lot fo demand on the US dollars. The rupee is under tremendous stress against the US dollars as the demand for the greenback is rising. The curbs on import are designed to discourage imports and curb the demand for dollars.

Kolkata: The Centre has tightened imports on silver and has announced that none can import the white metal without approval by DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade). In FY26 the silver imports by India jumped 150% compared to FY25. The importing spree is continuing even in this financial year and the government is concerned that it is draining a huge amount of dollars, which is constantly causing great stress on the rupee.
